How to choose the best solar self-consumption installation?

If you intend to purchase a solar self-consumption installation, you should carry out a preliminary exercise that will allow you to learn about the different solar panels that exist and analyze your needs and how this system will help you save on energy each month.

  1. Find out how many kilowatt-hours (kWh) you consume. Analyze actual consumption and make a calculation – subtract from the most recent value corresponding to the last month. These accounts allow you to obtain the average annual consumption.
  2. Analyze how electrical consumption is distributed. After knowing your annual consumption, it is important to understand how energy consumption is distributed, in order to know the energy that will be produced by the solar photovoltaic installation. Try to obtain an average value for the hours of lowest consumption and another for the hours of highest consumption.
  3. Check the power of your appliances used at the same time. This type of data will help you check, for example, the inverter’s output power. The ideal is to balance the system, so that it responds to peaks in consumption, but also does not become oversized when consumption is lower.

After deciding on the system you want to purchase, carefully analyzing the proposals they present to you and how much your savings will be, you should consult a specialist so that they can visit the installation site, confirm your consumption profile and support you in the most appropriate solution for your needs. energy needs.

What is the price of a solar self-consumption system?

The price is related to the installation of the solar panels themselves, which vary between €1,650 and €6,000. Depending on the installed power, it may require greater control by regulatory authorities, which will require registrations and licensing.

A UPAC with an installed power of up to 700 W does not require any registration or licensing, as long as the sale of solar energy is not planned, and is therefore exempt from any type of prior control.

Can I sell surplus energy to the grid?

Yes, you can sell surplus solar energy, as long as you purchase it with the necessary requirements. Firstly, you must always have a solar self-consumption system installed, registered in your name, and the production must be equal to or greater than 350 W. Register with DGEG, have a smart meter, your own CPE and open activity at the Customs Tax Authority.

Photovoltaic self-consumption legislation to take into account

The legislation for self-consumption is provided for in Decree-Law No. 15/2022, and licensing includes different steps, depending on the installed power.

  • Up to 700 W of installed power: no prior control is required, so you only need to ensure that your solar self-consumption installation is properly installed.
  • Between 700 W and 30 kW: you must register on the DGEG portal, this registration goes to ‘Self-consumption’ and carry out the ‘Prior Communication’.
  • Between 30 kW and 1 MW: you must register in advance and obtain an Exploration Certificate.
  • More than 1 MW: in these cases, you need a Production License, as well as an Exploration License.

Is it necessary to pay any fees for solar self-consumption?

There is no fee applied to solar self-consumption. However, there are costs associated with the administrative procedure, which vary depending on the installed power, as well as whether there is an intention to sell surplus solar energy to the grid.
