Solar Panels Electricity Sale
Discover the requirements for selling electricity generated by your photovoltaic solar panels. Find out if you need to open a business and how taxation works in terms of VAT and IRS.
Selling surplus solar energy can be extremely advantageous. Whether it's the opportunity to make money from the energy you don't use, turning your investment in solar panels into an additional source of income, or maximizing the use of the energy produced by your solar panels, avoiding waste and reducing your payback time on the solar panels, accelerating the financial benefits.
If you have a smart meter, it's possible that between consumption and production you end up generating surpluses that you can choose to sell to a supplier.
Steps for Selling Surpluses:
- Obtain the Production CPE: Register with the DGEG or do MCP (Mera Comunicação Prévia) and obtain a parameterized smart meter for the sale and measurement of the energy produced.
- Choosing the Supplier: Consult the Association of Energy Suppliers in the Liberalized Market (ACEMEL) for a list of buyers.
- Signing the Sales Contract: You will need documentation such as your name, NIF and MCP number.
- Additional Considerations: It may be necessary to open an activity with the tax authority, issue invoices and declare income with the IRS.
- To open an activity with the tax office, you can use code no. 35113 of the code of economic activities (CAE) or code no. 1519 of the code of the Personal Income Tax Code (CIRS).
- The invoice is issued in the name of the producer (self-invoicing).
- If you don't fall under the VAT regime (due to full compliance with the rules in Article 53 of the CIVA), i.e. if the annual amount of invoicing for the activity is less than €12,500 (in principle this will be the case), the self-invoice will be VAT-free.
- Make the income declaration in IRS annex b.
By following these steps, selling surplus energy becomes an excellent opportunity to optimize your solar energy system and make a positive contribution to the environment and your personal economy.
